White Oak Burl Series
In 2009 a client brought me a gigantic burly growth from the base of
a white oak on their farm in Bath County, wishing to have some
special pieces turned for their children. I used have of the
chunk up, but could not get to the rest of it until this fall.
There was virtually no decay in the two year hiatus. This is
amazing wood, so very dense and so amazingly dark, with the finished effect
of bog oak/aged leather. There is a good bit of bumpy nobly
texture from the drying shrinkage. Number 2 has a hump in the
bottom that heaved up while drying, so I have named it Lava Dome.
